Wilder Espace Danse (Sustainability aspect)
L'Espace Danse Québec - LEED-NC Silver accreditation.
Located in Montreal's Quartier des spectacles, L'Édifice Wilder - Espace danse, a 10-storey building built in 1918, was enlarged and renovated to create a venue for the creation, production and dissemination of dance, to house Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal, L'École de danse contemporaine de Montréal, L'Agora de la danse and Tangente. Some 14,490 m² of existing space were converted to administrative and related uses for all occupants. The 7,290 m² of new structures are spaces designed for dance workshops, with rehearsal and creation studios, a production studio, a studio-laboratory, wellness areas for dancers, and food services.

The creation and renovation of this cultural complex called for special consideration to be given to its integration into the existing urban fabric of downtown Montreal, optimizing existing conditions in terms of stormwater management and environmental footprint. In addition, the reuse and rehabilitation of the original building, a strong commitment to the preservation of architectural heritage and the protection of resources, became opportunities that supported innovative and sustainable design strategies enabling the project to achieve LEED NC Silver certification.
Below are some of the design strategies that contributed to the project's sustainability performance:
- Reduced carbon footprint by reusing an existing building
- Reducing GHGs by optimizing the project's energy performance
- Double-skin envelope composed of energy-efficient nanogel curtain walls
- Accessible floor systems combined with displacement ventilation to enhance occupant comfort
- Low-flow plumbing fixtures help reduce water and energy consumption
- Green and white roofs minimize the heat island effect
- Use of reclaimed wood for various purposes (flooring, walls, etc.)
