The creation and renovation of this cultural complex called for special consideration to be given to its integration into the existing urban fabric of downtown Montreal, optimizing existing conditions in terms of stormwater management and environmental footprint. In addition, the reuse and rehabilitation of the original building, a strong commitment to the preservation of architectural heritage and the protection of resources, became opportunities that supported innovative and sustainable design strategies enabling the project to achieve LEED NC Silver certification.

Below are some of the design strategies that contributed to the project's sustainability performance:

  • Reduced carbon footprint by reusing an existing building
  • Reducing GHGs by optimizing the project's energy performance
  • Double-skin envelope composed of energy-efficient nanogel curtain walls
  • Accessible floor systems combined with displacement ventilation to enhance occupant comfort
  • Low-flow plumbing fixtures help reduce water and energy consumption
  • Green and white roofs minimize the heat island effect
  • Use of reclaimed wood for various purposes (flooring, walls, etc.)
