Repositioning the Complexe Desjardins, a space in dialogue with its urban environment

Complexe Desjardins David Boyer 007

Our intervention focused on four key areas. To animate the interface with Sainte-Catherine Street and contribute to the festive atmosphere of the Quartier des Spectacles, we imagined and designed eleven elegant "urban lodges." These heated and glass-covered terraces, framed by white concrete arches, offer a welcoming space for passersby and restaurant patrons for a large part of the year. To improve the fluidity between the complex and the Quartier des Spectacles, we integrated informative digital kiosks, added contemporary urban furniture, and reorganized access points, particularly towards the Grande Place.

An in-depth analysis of the existing commercial mix and a strategic review of space allocation allowed for the release and development of nearly 40,000 square feet of new commercial rental space on two levels, energizing the complex's offerings. A significant move was the creation of a new entrance directly linking the hotel lobby to the Grande Place from the Jeanne-Mance and Sainte-Catherine intersection. This intervention, the result of rigorous technical analysis, consolidates the hotel entrance with a renewed architectural signature.

This complex project, carried out in the heart of a sensitive and busy urban and heritage environment, demonstrates Ædifica's expertise in navigating multiple constraints to deliver creative and effective solutions. By reimagining the interface of Complexe Desjardins and optimizing its spaces, we helped strengthen its attractiveness and consolidate its role as a destination of choice within Montreal's vibrant Quartier des Spectacles.
