National Blood Transfusion Centre, Port-au-Prince, Haïti
Sectors
HealthFollowing the devastating earthquake that struck Haiti, Ædifica dedicated its expertise to a project of paramount importance: the design of the National Blood Transfusion Center and Specialized Analysis Laboratory in Port-au-Prince. Faced with a health crisis exacerbated by the destruction of medical infrastructure, this project, initiated through funding from the American Red Cross, aimed to establish a modern and sustainable facility to ensure a continuous supply of safe blood products and a specialized analysis laboratory, thus addressing an urgent need for the Haitian population.

Our approach was guided by the necessity to create a functional infrastructure adapted to the local context and the specific needs of its many stakeholders, ranging from the community to healthcare professionals. Drawing on our international expertise in healthcare infrastructure planning and the in-depth local knowledge of our Haitian architectural team, we designed a building organized intuitively, practically, and economically to operate.
The design is distinguished by a clear separation of zones, ranging from open and airy public reception areas to more private and secure zones housing the laboratories. Particular attention was paid to optimizing natural ventilation in most spaces, thereby reducing reliance on air conditioning, which is essential only in the specialized laboratories. This project illustrates our commitment to providing architectural solutions adapted to complex humanitarian challenges, creating vital infrastructures that tangibly contribute to improving the well-being of the communities we serve. The Center's opening in 2020 testifies to the success of a close collaboration with the community and operational teams, resulting in an essential infrastructure for public health in Haiti.
