Maisonneuve-Rosemont Hospital – Ambulatory Care
Sectors
HealthServices
ArchitectureThe Maisonneuve-Rosemont Hospital’s major ambulatory care centre is focused on the needs of its users. It is organized in accordance with the services to be rendered and foreseeable changes, namely a massive transfer from hospitalization to outpatient services, both for users experiencing an acute episode and for those with chronic conditions. The new centre also handles patients who were previously treated in nearby short-term hospitals that have either closed their doors or changed their roles.
We developed the functional and technical definition of the site and the characteristics of this 29,435 m2 centre containing all the outpatient activities of the surgery and medical clinics, the departments of ophthalmology, obstetrics and gynecology, medical imaging, outpatient medicine, dialysis, oncology and outpatient surgery, as well as reception and admission for the entire hospital.
The analysis and evaluation of the current and future activities of the various wings of the hospital allowed us to optimize the work on the ambulatory care centre. Based on a big-picture vision of the institution, we developed a master plan that grouped together outpatient activities that were normally carried out in several different wings.
The outpatient centre is a gateway to the hospital and provides it with a welcoming urban presence. It has universal access and is connected to the cruciform tower built in 1952, conserving as many of the existing windows as possible. It has three above-ground floors and one floor of auxiliary services in the basement, in order to preserve the horizontal distribution of the care program and to ensure direct connections with the existing technical equipment located at the corresponding levels in the neighbouring wings (medical imaging, operating room, laboratories, sterilization).
The use of the existing yellow brick contributes to the integration of the new building into the whole. Its contemporary, welcoming style presents a sober institutional image in keeping with the entire hospital complex. It meets the requirements in terms of price, flexibility, versatility and energy performance.

The generous interior space with bright colours includes an entrance area and a three-level glazed central atrium, two accessible open-air interior courtyards, two large terraces for employees and ribbons of spacious waiting areas. The transparent, open spaces offer an environment completely different from a traditional hospital setting. All access doors to the building's wings and to the Maisonneuve building from the atrium are kept open to ensure smooth circulation.
Our concept took into account the objectives expressed by the Corporation d'hébergement du Québec and the hospital. The new ambulatory care centre will be able to meet the needs of users for the next ten years. The services offered and the activities taking place there will be able to keep up with constant technological advances and adapt to them. Therapeutic and diagnostic services are integrated within the clinics and the day centre. Above all, the centralization of the care provided at the ambulatory care centre is user-oriented.
