Hôpital Saint-Michel (Jacmel)

Jacmel, Haiti

Built in 1954, the Saint-Michel Hospital in Jacmel was the only public hospital in Haiti’s South-East department. It was heavily damaged in the January 2010 earthquake and reconstruction was crucial. The client, the Canadian Red Cross, commissioned Ædifica and Japanese partners Yamashita Sekkei and Yachiyo to manage the reconstruction project, provide the architectural design and electromechanical engineering services and supervise the new building site. Ædifica's proven expertise in international project management was especially vital in this joint Canada, Japan and the U.S initiative, which also included on-site construction by a Spanish general contractor. Built in harmony with its surroundings, the new state-of-the-art hospital is both earthquake- and cyclone-resistant and serves a population of over 500,000. Among its most prominent design features are the ventilation and natural lighting, as well as an innovative wastewater treatment system using reed bed technology.
