The project consisted of an 8,200 m² expansion and a complete renovation of the 4,000 m² emergency department, which can now handle 53 stretchers.

To correct many physical and functional shortcomings, the space had to be completely reorganized in order to meet current medical requirements. The result was a plan for a major renovation of the existing emergency care unit and an addition more double its size, with all the critical functions such as examination and treatment rooms, observation rooms, and all related services specific to the proper practice of emergency medicine.

The proposal was for one level to accommodate the shock unit, the observation room for adults and isolated observation rooms. The design takes into account constraints such as the immovability of the ambulance entrance and the elevators. It includes a new concept put forward by the Régie régionale de la Santé et des Services sociaux, which consists of installing 15 overflow spaces to deal with peak periods. The observation rooms are all separated by rigid partitions, ensuring patient confidentiality.
