MEC CARREFOUR LAVAL01 / 9

MEC

MONTREAL, QUEBEC, CANADA

Assisting MEC since 2009, Ædifica is responsible for deploying brand stores, including preleasing studies, store planning and design management, construction drawings and site supervision. To date, over twenty stores have been deployed for this client across Canada, in collaboration with various architecture firms.

MEC, Carrefour Laval

In 2016, MEC launched a new concept store that embraces the brand’s commitment to sustainable design. This concept was based on a new customer journey which served as the foundation for the development of the architectural expression, storefront, exterior landscaping, store planning and merchandising strategies.

Embracing MEC brand mission and values, the new store concept is to be a destination to help members meet and engage with like-minded enthusiasts, find wonderful products that enhance their active lifestyle and discover new compelling activities.

Develop by Proscenium and Ædifica’s designers, the conceptual narrative blends rustic outdoor features and detail with modern architectural compositions. The overall tonality conveys a West Coast flair, as a nod to MEC’s origins. Including sustainable design strategies at all scales of the project, the contemporary rustic design includes intricate curtain walls, slender wood columns and canopy, and a material palette consisting of wood, metal, concrete and stone sourced from a local quarry. The store is meant to feel inviting and radiates nature and warmth.

The MEC Carrefour Laval location is one of the new stores that opened in 2016. The construction program features 8 news stores and 3 stores relocations.

MEC, St-Denis

In 2012, Ædifica develop the MEC urban store concept located on St-Denis St. For this concept, we adopted a Pop-up strategy to minimized investment while maximizing use of space. The prototype, which allows for more merchandising flexibility and strategic zoning, is a commercial laboratory ensuring MEC to test new products, brands and categories in a downtown urban market. A sub-identity were develop by our team to harmonize the graphic standards of the brand with this new store concept.

Crafted with the best sustainable design practices, the project follows the client’s internal protocol (MEC Green Building Systems) and occupies about 60% less space than other existing locations.
