Desjardins King StreetToronto, Ontario, Canada
Mouvement Desjardins, the fifth largest cooperative financial group in the world, wanted to make a statement for its first location in Toronto’s downtown financial district. Designed to serve consumers and businesses alike in a unique one-stop-financial-shop format, this new financial center is a tangible demonstration of Desjardins' continued commitment to increasing awareness of the cooperative business model. The Toronto office is located on the ground floor of a circa 1965 International-Style landmark heritage building.
The project’s main challenge was to design an innovative workplace environment fitting all of the requirements for a multiservice financial center, but within a smaller footprint that represented a third of the space usually allocated for this type of layout. The concept as a whole also had to respect the constraints inherent to the preservation of heritage buildings and landmarks.
Another design challenge concerned the building’s exterior views. The new layout was to maintain a clear outdoor view for the tenants located in the mezzanine while controlling their view of the Desjardins space below. A wood and steel screen was thus suspended in front of the mezzanine’s glazing and created a bold backdrop for the double height space in the front.
